How much do a mezuzah and tefillin cost in 2026? Market prices explained
2026 price ranges observed in France, Israel and the United States for a mezuzah (7 to 15 cm) and tefillin (peshutim, gassot, mehudar), what explains the differences, and Beth Hasofer prices.
Mezuzah prices in 2026
A mezuzah is sold by scroll size: 7 cm (small cases), 10 cm (standard), 12 cm (recommended for the front door) and 15 cm. At equal size, the price depends on the level of script: kosher (halachically valid), mehudar (refined script conforming to as many opinions as possible) or mehudar min hamehudar (excellence by an expert sofer).
Ranges observed in October 2026 among sofrim and Judaica shops: 10 cm kosher $49 to $80 in the US, €55 to €120 in France (median around €80), 165 to 200 ₪ in Israel; 12 cm mehudar $110 to $140 in the US, €75 to €170 in France, 240 to 315 ₪ in Israel; 15 cm mehudar min hamehudar $146 to $325 in the US.
At Beth Hasofer: 7 cm €49, 10 cm €69, 12 cm kosher €89, 12 cm mehudar €119 to €129, 15 cm mehudar min hamehudar €219, pack of five 10 cm mezuzot €319. Every price includes the computer check, proofreading by a second sofer and the named certificate.
Tefillin prices in 2026
Tefillin prices depend first on the batim: peshutim mehudarim (one piece of thin leather) cost $360 to $565 in the US, €370 to €825 in France, 1,200 to 2,000 ₪ in Israel; gassot (thick single-piece leather, repairable for life) $565 to $995 in the US, €590 to €1,290 in France, 2,600 to 3,800 ₪ in Israel; gassot mehudar min hamehudar $1,400 to $1,895 in the US, €1,290 to €1,575 in France, 4,000 to 6,500 ₪ in Israel.
Tefillin are markedly more expensive in Israel than in Europe or the US, which makes buying from a European workshop attractive for Israeli families, provided the script and custom match.
At Beth Hasofer: peshutim mehudarim €490, gassot mehudar €890 to €950 depending on the script, gassot mehudar min hamehudar €1,490, Rabbeinu Tam gassot €790, bar mitzvah set (gassot, embroidered bag, guide, video session) €990.
Why such price differences?
Working time: a 10 cm mezuzah takes a sofer two to four hours of writing, a pair of tefillin three to five days for the four parchments of each box. The sofer's level: an expert sofer whose script is recognized as mehudar min hamehudar charges more. The batim: gassot pressed from a single piece of leather cost several hundred euros to make, versus a few dozen for peshutim. The checks: software, proofreading by a second sofer, sometimes a third at high levels. Finally, intermediaries: a bookshop or Judaica store adds its margin to the sofer's.
Beware of abnormally low prices. A "handwritten" mezuzah under $45 or tefillin under $350 are almost always printed, written by a non-sofer or assembled from glued batim, and therefore pasul.
